【Support Kyoto’s Crasftsmen #2】
I visited @renista_nishijin to learn all about Nishijin-Ori, Kyoto’s exquisite textile since 555 years ago.
As with many other traditional craft, the artisans are facing lots of challenges. Interestingly, since Nishijin-Ori technique originally was used to make kimono obi, the maximum width of the textile is only 30cm. So the only other items they can produce with Nishijin-ori are amulets, hina festival dolls and pouches…
With Sakai san’s innovation, @renista_nishijin is now able to produce larger fabric for various usage, including apparel such as kimono dress!
Stay tuned for my next post to see the beautiful Nishijin-ori kimono dress!
