I am posting this video as a reminder of him, because I know in my heart that this is how he would want to be remembered and he would get a massive kick out of this. This was his sense of humour in a nutshell. Whilst I may find this hard right now, I know that Franco would deal with it. He would sit with the grief for a while, understand it, then finally accept it, laugh at it, mock the bullshit dark vagaries of life, and forge forward in the only way he knew how to. With a stubborn determination, beautiful spirit, a black sense of humour, iron will and a generous sense of joy and kindness. I grew up with Franco. We lived on the same street. One of the characters in my first book is partly an amalgamation of him. Some of the stories in that book are anecdotes that he was heavily involved in, or even created. He knew my father, and was very loved by my family. His sister used to babysit myself and my sisters as kids. He was, and is, an integral part of my life. We both got into film without being aware that it was our calling. We reunited at the Galway Film Festival, which will always have a special place in my heart. He was obsessed with cinema. Specifically horror and SyFy. He knew more about horror films than anybody I’ve ever met. He was the reason that I made The Inside. It was just the two of us. I had a beer with Franco in 2010, before I had really managed to get any serious work as an actor, or as a filmmaker, and pitched him the concept of The Inside. We had no money. No time, and zero budget. He thought it was crazy. And impossible to pull off in 5 days and how we intended to do it. So we obviously had to do it together. And be damned with the reality.
