As the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area, it is home to more than 🌿 2,000 plant species, 🐦 706 bird species, and 🦍 218 mammal species. It is one of 16,000 Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), as it is of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the persistence of biodiversity.⁠ ⁠ The past year has been an especially challenging year for Virunga’s wildlife, wildlands, and their guardians. The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a deficit in funding for protected areas around the world, due to a halt in ecotourism. And 6 Vriunga rangers lost their lives in an attack in January.⁠ ⁠ 🤝 We are rewilding Virunga with the @EuropeanCommission and @VirungaNationalPark, to restore the park’s ecosystems with a focus on great apes, and by building on the Virunga Alliance Program to create more than 100,000 jobs that draw people out of the armed militia and into productive society.⁠ ⁠ 🤔 Are you ready to rewild Virunga with us?
