At least 18 people were killed in Myanmar on Feb. 28 after security forces opened fire on crowds peacefully demonstrating against the military takeover, @apnews reports, citing the @unitednations. Deaths were reported in Yangon, the country's largest city, as well as Dawei, Mandalay, Myeik, Bago and Pokokku. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres "strongly" condemned the crackdown in a statement, calling the use of lethal force against peaceful protesters "unacceptable" and urging the international community to "come together and send a clear signal to the military that it must respect the will of the people of Myanmar as expressed through the election and stop the repression."
