Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto / During the scientific research expedition to Borneo's Gunung Mulu National Park in 2018, the team spent a week based on the banks of the Melinau River at Camp 5 in the Melinau Gorge. Camp 5 is a small wooden structure nestled in the gorge between two massifs, Mount Benarat (pictured) and Mount Api. This base offered the team a great starting point to access the nearby caves where the scientists had several sampling sites. At the end of every long and tiring day, it was an amazing feeling to relax while gazing up at the white cliffs of limestone exposing several cave entrances. I remembered climbing to them and exploring the maze of cave passages inside the mountain on previous expeditions some 10 years ago.
