As seen in the pages of V129, our upcoming SS21 issue, @therealruthecarter discusses the early beginnings of her storied career (which was just commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, might V add!) and how her first credit as a costume designer on #SpikeLee’s 1988 film “School Daze” helped set her standards on Black storytelling, saying ”We wanted to uplift the race, and show a side of us that has not been shown before. That’s why you don’t see any gold chains. We were cognizant of what we think of ourselves and our communities, that is what we projected on-screen as a representation of us. Not the buffoonery and the gangs, but a true representation of Black people.”
