“When I came to recognize that I had an ability to make things that capture people’s senses, and can then influence their thoughts and choices, I did feel like I should not be exploitative, and I should seek to make things that had some utility,” says Shaka King, whose new film, “Judas and the Black Messiah,” is out now in theatres and on HBO Max. “I recognize my power as a visual storyteller, and I don’t want to do harm with that ability. But I do want space to remain creative and tell anything that comes to my mind.” Tap the link in our bio to read Jelani Cobb’s interview with the filmmaker, on the value of both political and escapist art, what he owes to the Black directors who came before him, and how he situates himself in the current creative ferment of Black filmmakers and artists.
