The closest of friends ... Akmad was Dr. Birute Galdikas’ first adopted orangutan daughter, having met Akmad only one month after she first arrived in Borneo in 1971. Akmad was rescued from a logging camp by Dr Galdikas where she was being held in a make shift cage, after her mother was killed. Their friendship has now lasted for close to 50 years.
