Marion Davies, in the film’s depiction, was a casualty of an era in which both Hollywood and the country were dominated by powerful white men. “In a room, she lit up everything,” says Seyfried. “Even if onscreen people never got to see that.” And to David Fincher, Seyfried perfectly fit the profile of the actor who should portray her. After becoming a breakout star at 18, Seyfried spent a good portion of her 20s playing wide-eyed, cheerful beauties and trying to avoid the limits the movie industry puts on young women. But it wasn’t just her ingenue experience that Fincher was looking for. “I knew that I wanted somebody who had been through that… and who had kind of come out the other end with a palpable sense of humor,” he said.
