Olympian Verneda Thomas (top row, third from the left) was a pioneer in the sport of volleyball. She was part of the first U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball Team roster at the 1964 Olympics Games in Tokyo and was the only African American player on that team. Following her playing career, she became a USA National referee and was an FIVB qualified scorekeeper. In addition to being a great volleyball player, she was also a member of the U.S. women’s track and field team and won the national high jump title in 1957. Verneda passed away at the age of 79 on March 30, 2016. #BlackHistoryMonth
