“Another Green World” is one of the best-known works by the artist Nicole Eisenman, who constructs figurative, narrative images filled with angst and humor. The painting shows two dozen youngish people at a houseparty, painted at various levels of verisimilitude, as if from different periods in art history. Eisenman often paints figures that don’t supply binary gender information, and her work tends to be marked by indeterminacy—of mood, of the likelihood of a happy ending. It also is animated by a generous, sometimes goofy earnestness. “I enjoy my work, and it’s a beautiful world, even in its falling-apartness,” she said.
