A pivotal moment in understanding the inherent violence of policing came when I was at Standing Rock. We, as water protectors, were trying to stop the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which would cut through the Missouri river and put the Indigenous communities in danger, not to mention destroying their sacred land. As I looked out and saw the hundreds of police from many different police departments, I realized that it didn't matter what the "intentions" of any individual officer were. Even if they had the "best of intentions," they HAD to be there, upholding the interests of corporations and continuing the white supremacist legacy of colonization. While there were many officers that went out of their way to actively abuse their power, every single officer there was complicit in upholding white supremacy simply by their repression of our movement in order to protect profits over people. Again, It is a fundamental part of their job.

Even without committing the worst abuses of power, being a police officer still requires the enforcement of racist and classist laws that disproportionately harm BIPOC people and poor people (especially poor BIPOC people). Criminalizing sex workers, unhoused people, people struggling with addiction, etc. are all part of the job and always have been. Policing started in the U.S. as slave patrols in the South and strikebreakers in the North and always will be in allegiance to white supremacy, capitalism, and the elite. If we took the massive amounts of money we spent on policing and prisons and instead put it towards transforming our communities so that people could heal and thrive, we would be living in a much better world. #DefundThePolice
