It’s the second week of Monlam, the Great Prayer Festival. In past years, the annual "sunning of the Buddha" is one of the most important ceremonies at Labrang Monastery which is regarded as the top Tibetan Buddhism educational institution in China. In this ritual, the world's largest Thangka of Buddha (90ft in length, 40ft in width) is unveiled at first light on the side of a mountain to the delight of thousands of monks, pilgrims and worshipers. By just witnessing it, the audience is said to gain merit on the road to enlightenment.
