Diamonds are not forever! 💎💍

Did you know that diamonds intrinsically are worthless and they are not forever because they decay faster than most rocks? Also it’s a myth that diamonds are rare. Diamonds actually number among the most common gems.

In 1938 diamond prices were falling because of the Great Depression and the CEO of De Beers (the cartel would stockpile diamonds, limit supply, and drive up demand and costs ) decided to hire one of the best ad agency! They came up with the campaign “A Diamond Is Forever.” You’ve heard it. You’ve believed it. We’ve all fallen for the creative genius of excellent advertising. And in no time men all over were spending a month’s earnings to buy a piece of carbon from De Beers!

But isn’t this about signifying love? If it is, can’t we have a symbol of marriage without irrational consumption? In Greece, the couple exchanges wreaths that are placed on their heads which symbolize an eternal connection of the minds. In Jews the couple writes a text that outlines the future relationship of the bride and the groom. One couple somewhere exchanged tattoos on their fingers and another decided to offer a donation as their symbol of love.

As our country matures, shouldn’t our engagement traditions? What do you think? Would you still buy a diamond knowing that it’s a marketing stunt or would you do something else to symbolise your love?
