Nara developed his signature aesthetic whilst studying in Germany, synthesising Japanese and Western pop culture. It was during this solitary period that he formed his affinity for punk rock, influencing his work since; he has done album art for iconic Japanese punk bands Bloodthirsty Butchers, The Star Club and an animated video for Shonen Knife. Through music and art, Nara found community. ​⁣
