Last February on this day 2020, I was photographing these Japanese red crowned cranes performing a happy dance in Hokkaido, Japan. Tancho tsuru in Japanese, are a National Treasure and have been a beloved symbol of longevity and love, luck, happiness and fidelity. Couples will mate for life. Courtship displays and shrill crying are thought to strengthen their bond and show excitement. They also seem to dance for the sheer fun of it. Little did I know that this would be my last trip and last shoot outside the USA as Hokkaido closed its borders and covid quarantine began. #tanchotsuru #crane #japanesecrane #redcrestedcrane #hokkaidowinter #hokkaidolove
