This week on Behind the Views: Carlos Idun-Tawiah (@carlosidun). Carlos first started out as a portraitist, and that early work taught him the value in connecting with local people wherever he goes. “I try to break down the way of life of the community I find myself in, through the people that own it,” he recently told T+L. “I always maintain a conscious effort to blend both the people and the landscape seamlessly. I call it ‘faces and places.’”
.
Thinking back to the moment photography clicked for him, Carlos remembers taking a portrait of his mother on his first DSLR camera that his father had gifted him. “My mom wasn’t all smiles at the time because my family was grieving my late dad, but that didn’t stop me from seizing a very special moment.” After taking that photo and understanding its significance, “I felt I had something to offer using this art form,” he says.
.
His advice for aspiring photographers is to do whatever it takes to make sure traveling never feels like work. If it starts to become “a chore to travel to ‘stay relevant’ as a photographer,” something isn’t right. “Rather, make an intentional decision to see other parts of our world and share photos to best depict your experience.”
.
In Carlos’ go-to camera bag you’ll find: a full-frame DSLR, 16-35mm lens, 70-200mm lens, camera strap, and an iPhone. For travel photographers who are always on the move, Carlos says multifunctional lenses and lightweight cameras are key. “Don’t overthink it. Try to streamline your gadgets down to the minimum you need.”
