Saw a group of water buffalos taking a leisurely bath in their waterhole. A sight I’ve never seen before! The village was so fascinating, thirty eight towering traditional bamboo houses with alang-alang tatched roof. Laid underneath these traditional homes (the bottom part of the house are usually kept open or used to store animals), or sometimes up on the porch, ikat weavings bringing color to the village. The women at Waruwora, like many in Sumba, spend their free time weaving fabric as aan additional source of income. They lay out all the strings and then tie it (ikat) based on the pattern they want to incorporate in the fabric, with each region having their own symbology and each motif carrying stories with nature at its heart. Each of this distinctive handwoven fabric can take between 2-4 weeks to make, and holds an important role in Sumbanese religious rituals and traditional ceremonies. With their symbology, the cloths also reflect social status – and interestingly enough, even to this day, certain motifs are reserved for royalty and are forbidden to copy or even photograph! Thanks to the @sumbafoundation and this special trip they arranged, I managed to have an immersive experience into Sumbanese cultural life, and even try my hand at weaving (trust me it’s a lot harder than it looks!).」2月18日 20時00分 - ralineshah
