It’s contraindicated in cats ... 🧐 🤔 ... unless of course it’s a big one, then it’s perfectly ok and works a treat, especially on fly strikes to the ears. In the wild flies can be a huge irritation as well, however wild lions can always move away from the infested area and in some parts of Africa, especially East Africa, they’ve mastered climbing trees where it’s cooler and generally there’s a breeze which the flies don’t seem to enjoy. In captivity, because of the finite size of enclosures where lions are kept, controlling flies is a major concern and problem because the lions rely entirely on humans to keep their areas clean of faeces, uneaten meat and other sources of fly infestations. Fly traps and clean enclosures are essential but sometimes the most effective relief comes from ointment directly applied to the affected areas. You can see a massive difference in the lions that are tolerant of it and those that aren’t. This is why overcrowded, small and inadequate enclosures (difficult to clean because there’s no where to isolate the lions) are a real problem in the control of flies and other potential pathogens in the captive lion industry, which currently has over 300 breeding facilities and around 12000 individuals.
