This guitar belonged to the “godfather of go-go music,” Charles Louis “Chuck” Brown, who energized the Washington, D.C., music scene in the late 1960s and 1970s.
Brown put together a band called the Soul Searchers in the 1970s and began innovating his signature sound to create a highly energetic, danceable style that incorporates call and response with the audience. Go-go blends R&B, funk and hip-hop, with an emphasis on a syncopated percussion beat.
His 1974 Gibson ES-335 six-string guitar is in our @smithsonianacm's collection. #BlackHistoryMonth
