For example the people of Northern Africa, the Middle east and Afghanistan are historically some of the most noble and cultured of any civilisation. Their poetry, philosophy, their art and the wisdom they bring in their souls is of such huge value . More than gold or oil, the most valuable asset right now is knowledge. Knowledge will allow us to understand ourselves, the future and ultimately the universe. We should celebrate the knowledge of people who have seen the Atlas Mountains or the lakes of the Band-e-Amir or the Nubian Pyramids or the Sahara desert. They can show us things we can’t see , tell us thoughts we can’t imagine ! We can learn so much from them and this is true for everything from science to the arts. Wisdom is ultimately what humanity needs. Anyone who speaks another language will know that it brings more than just a new set of words but instead it’s a new understanding of how different cultures think, reason and dream. A society only becomes truly rich by taking on new ideas, listening to different opinions and ways of doing things. Otherwise we will stagnate and wither from cultural inbreeding. If we want to be an enlightened society then these people who come to us are gifts of unparalleled worth. On this day of celebration of love please try and see the infinite benefits of opening our arms and showing love, hospitality, compassion, empathy as well as safety and protection from oppression and torture to our fellow humans. This is what would make us into a cultural beacon of all that can be great about humanity. Imagine if we were a country strong enough, enlightened enough and forward thinking enough to celebrate other cultures and see them as beneficial to us, rather than fearing them and turning back inwards on ourselves. Wouldn’t that be a symbol of a great civilisation?
