“I miss going to school because you can discuss and help each other to understand faster,” says 12-year-old Alfani from Kenya on the challenges he faced during school closures.

The cost of closing schools – which at the peak of COVID-19 lockdowns affected 90 per cent of students globally and left more than 1/3 of schoolchildren without access to remote learning – has been devastating.

We must prioritise reopening schools as safely as possible. No effort must be spared to ensure children and young people can continue their education.
