I remember that special musical paradigm-shift upstairs at the old bar called "The Zoo" in my very musically secluded hometown of Innisfail, Alberta, Canada. By this time, I had been through all the Rock, Metal, Prog. of the day. Long story short, I met the drummer from the band who was playing that weekend and asked him, what the hell is all that stuff you're playing? I could bash out a pretty good double bass groove in those days, but I didn't even know what a paradiddle was. So, the next day we met up in THE most hideous hotel room I'd, to this day, ever have been in, lol. He asked me if I'd ever heard of 'The Chick Corea Elektric Band?' I'm like... uhh... what's that?? He throws on the opening track 'Rumble' and then fast-forwarded the cassette tape to "Got a Match." MINDBLOWN!!! It changed something in my very core and altered the course of my musical destiny to some degree. What was this fusion thing that he, so eagerly, talked about? and what is Jazz anyway? Up until that point, I thought it all sounded like elevator music or something. That was the real beginning of the quest or search for this other thing I could feel burning inside. I went thru all the Return to Forever, Miles, Hancock, Akoustic Band on and on... that opened the doors to Keith Jarret, Bill Evans/etc. and all the Jazz pioneers of the past. I'm still searching for "that thing," But I'm so grateful for all the inspiration he bestowed on me and to help clarify what it means to be free musically and truly improvise.
