In '92, the summer after I graduated from college, my parents gave me $1,000 and told me to take some time off to do some traveling, so I decided to drive with my girlfriend from Boston to Miami and back, putting stickers up all along the way. Everytime we came to a "welcome" state sign, we stopped and put a 12 x 12" sticker on the sign. I didn't know if people would notice the stickers as they drove past, since the stickers were so small relative to the lettering.

Later that summer, a friend in New York City called me and said he saw one of the stickers on the news. Apparently Connecticut had legalized some casinos, and the reporter delivering the story stood under the "Connecticut Welcomes You" sign, right below the Andre sticker. A lot of what I do is about secondary impressions, affecting not only the people who see the sign in person, but also the people who see the sign on the news or wherever else it may appear. It's definitely a coup to be able to make something seem larger than it actually is.
