Firstly, and most importantly, thankfully both players are OK and healthy after the incident 🙏🏻 With regards to the challenge itself - and I feel very strongly about this particularly on the back of the challenge that finished my career and put my life at serious risk - when is the perception going to change around this sort of aerial challenge? I believe strongly that if this type of late challenge from behind happened on the ground it would without doubt have received either a yellow or red card. It was with force and mistimed, and surely therefore dangerous play. There must therefore be a consequence for dangerous play, regardless of whether it’s mistimed on the floor or in the air. For the avoidance of doubt, I am not suggesting in any way that this was intentional or that there was any intent to hurt Martial. I don’t believe that at all. But it is a point of principle and a perception that I believe needs changing in the game. Many challenges on the floor that are punished are equally not intentional, just slightly late and mistimed, and receive punishment. So what is the difference? Surely if you are late to the ball, and inadvertently indanger an opponent, it’s dangerous play; whether on the ground or in the air. The head is the most vulnerable part of the body and injury to the brain can have devastating consequences yet there still doesn’t seem to be a consistent management of challenges in the air compared to those on the ground. The safety of our players is and always will be the most important thing, and we must protect them 🙏🏻」2月12日 2時14分 - ryan8mason
