The facts: In 2008, following a very public mental health crisis, Britney Spears, then 26, had control of her finances, health care, and aspects of her daily routine handed over to her father, Jamie. The conservatorship was initially temporary. Twelve years later, it’s still in place.

The court documents and hearings—there have been many over the years—have been mostly sealed to the public, so little is known about the actual nature and conditions of the agreement. We know that, during the 12 years she has been under conservatorship, Spears has been working nonstop (she released four albums, went on as many world tours, and had a very successful Las Vegas residency).
