This week we’ll be diving into the essence of all things funk, a sound crafted by legendary Black Artists like George Clinton, Curtis Mayfield and Betty Davis, to name a few. To some it’s a state of mind, to others it’s a celebration. No matter how you define it, its true essence sparks from its undeniable groove and rhythm. Now let’s take a step back to the Golden Era of Funk. Many attribute the origins of funk to James Brown in the 1960s with albums like ‘Out of Sight’ and ‘Cold Sweat’. He complemented his delivery style by emphasizing rhythm instead of melody. To accomplish this the downbeat became more pronounced, creating space for his band to add syncopation (placing rhythms and accents in unexpected places) to the rest of the beats. Another funky pioneer in the 1970s was Larry Graham, bassist for Sly & the Family Stone, who changed the world by thumping the strings with his thumb and plucking with his finger, creating the iconic slap bass sound. This rhythmic revelation brought bass to the forefront. As funk evolved, artists like Rick James would make the style and performance even more accessible to mainstream listeners. But one can't embrace this style without a deep appreciation for low-end legends who paved the way, like Bootsy Collins and James Jamerson. Get ready for bell bottoms, bass lines, and righteous rhythms as we continue our celebration of Black History Month.」2月9日 5時00分 - fender
