How impressive is this Ice Stupa in Ladakh (Himalaya)?
With its sheer beauty of lofty Himalayan peaks, high mountain passes, lush meadows, serene alpine lakes and ancient Buddhist monasteries, Ladakh is the epitome of nature’s craftsmanship.
The Ice Stupa is an artificial glacier that looks like a giant 30 to 50 m high ice tower or cone. It's used in Ladakh for storing winter water. Ladakh is a cold desert with winter temperatures exceeding -30 ° C and an average annual rain/snow fall of just 100 mm at altitudes of 2,700m to 4,000m. This artificial glacier is made to freeze and retain the water that, in the winter, keeps flowing and wasting away down the streams and into the rivers. In springtime, the ice melts as farmers need water for their fields.
