Here’s John’s story about Brian leading the standing ovation after its premiere: “Throwing back 15 years to this date in 2006 when an early version of Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him?) premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The festival’s Exec Director, Roger Durling, had heard about the film and really wanted to give it a showcase. Although we were still tinkering with the open, close and sequences in-between, we were excited by the prospect of showing a cut to a live audience. The Lobero Theatre was packed to overflowing with 700+ people including many in the aisles. As the closing credits began to roll applause began in the center of the theatre and spread outward in large waves. Brian Wilson, who appears in the film, jumped to his feet to lead the crowd in a standing ovation. In addition to Brian, Harry’s good friend Micky Dolenz (who’s brilliant in the film) came to see the cut and show his support. Also in the house was Jeff Bridges who darted out of the theatre during our Q&A to get to the Border’s next door before it closed. He was leaving for Japan the next morning and wanted to buy every Nilsson CD he could find to take with him for the long plane ride. Unfortunately, it took our team another 4 years to complete and release the film, largely due to challenges with music clearance.
