When I was in school, my teacher introduced me to this memoir "Sold for Silver" by Janet Lim, and I was inspired by her remarkable life story.

In the 1930s, Janet was sold for $250 as a mui sui, or slave girl from China to Singapore, when she was only 8 years old.

She eventually freed herself from child bondage by making her own escape, and was later taken into a girls' home. She then went on to receive education in a mission school, and later joined St Andrew's Mission Hospital as a nurse.

During World War II, she was captured by the Japanese and made a ‘comfort woman’. Thankfully for her, she managed to escape once again, and returned to nursing at St Andrew's.

Not long after, Janet became Singapore's first Asian hospital matron, and the first woman in Singapore to publish a book in English.

I am awed by Janet’s grit and tenacity in overcoming the odds and rising above adversity to change the course of her life. To me, she is a true inspiration to many women (and men alike) of our future generations - nothing is impossible if one sets out to achieve it.

This year, join me in celebrating SG Women and show appreciation for all the wonderful women in your life! 💙

Let’s take part in the Conversations on Singapore Women’s Development at go.gov.sg/sgwomen, and build a better, more inclusive society.
