“Whenever people see me perform, I want them to see the character in the piece, not the person dancing it,” says 21-year-old dancer Mason Alexander (@alwxsnder).
“I was raised in several studio environments where it was normalized that the path to proper, professional dance success was through ballet. Naturally, I internalized that and spent most of my formative dancing years striving to thrive in ballet,” he says.
But Mason finally found his calling when he joined Inlet Dance Theatre, a professional modern dance theater company. “It [modern dance] gave me a permission statement to relax my rigid idea of what success in the dance world could be for me.
At this point in my life, success would be becoming known for what I’ve achieved, performed and created as an artist, as a dancer, but not with any “othering” titles preceding. I’m not looking for token success, I’m looking for authentic success. I want to feel like I earned it.
My career is still so fresh. My mind is full of ideas of what I want to eventually create, but for now, I want to focus on honing my craft. We are a part of the work-to-live generation, and only a handful of us are lucky enough to find a work that also feels like living.”
