I would be lying if I didn’t say I was nervous. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This story, my immigration journey, is one I’ve held closest to my heart. It is one that is full of struggle, self discovery, and everything in between. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I opened up about being undocumented pre-DACA era while we were waiting for 13 years for our residency application to be approved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This was something I kept a secret for so long because pre-DACA that’s what you did. It was a taboo subject. Nobody disclosed they were undocumented and lived in the shadows. It’s lonely. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m glad that’s no longer the case - that people have this form of status (even if it needs to be reformed) as it allowed many to come out of the shadows and find a community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a huge secret to keep, but it was part of my life for so long. This was the first time I shared it with a stranger. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And now it’s also out into the world. This piece of me has finally seen the light. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you are struggling to share your story, you are not alone.
