This portrait was shot by @joeyjoeygarfield for Juxtapoz back in 2013, and still a favorite. I remember my first "business" trip for Juxtapoz was to interview Ricky in the summer of 2007. On probably the hottest day of that year, we kicked back at a restaurant on Charles Street in the West Village and he told me his life story, from public school to the Beasties to seeing Andy Warhol and Basquiat on the street to everything in between. We went back to his apartment to see his disorganized and incredible slide collection, and if you were lucky enough to catch his epic slideshow presentation, it was the kind of storytelling we may never get back. He told stories that were like engrained in the NYC psyche; he had a pulse. When he told a story it was like folktales of the culture I loved. He was difficult and great. He was a legend and hung with the legends. He immortalized a certain era of NYC that I don't know if we will ever see again. The last time we had him in the magazine was a great issue curated by Joey Garfield honoring MCA and the Beastie Boys back in 2013, and of course, Ricky had to be part of it. I love that portrait that Joey took (above). Ricky, on the ground, Joey turned it upside down, just the perfect nod to Ricky's whole persona. Ricky captured a raw essence of youth, and his timing was just right. I will miss a chance encounter with him, but the photos have already stood the test of time...
