A new coat of paint is a surefire, and relatively easy, way to change the feel of a space.
This kitchen in a 19th-century former silk-weaving factory along Italy’s Lake Como has custom-paneled shelves in varying tones of sunny yellow alongside an enormous suspended lighting fixture.
Generally speaking, warmer, darker tones will make a space feel more intimate while lighter, cooler colors will make it look more expansive — and if you aren’t up for applying more than one coat, don’t change the color too drastically If you are game for something a little more involved, painting the ceiling the same color as the walls can be a striking update and make old-fashioned shades feel more modern.
