This is "The May Room," a piece of interactive art created by artist Shantell Martin (@shantell_martin). In 2019, she was commissioned to decorate the inside and outside of Our Lady Star of the Sea, a military chapel on Governor's Island in New York City, with her signature bold, black-marker style. In the chapel, visitors were invited to take off their shoes and follow her drawing on the floor, which formed a sort of maze. The artwork also included phrases on the walls that said things like "May you be wise" and "May you sleep soundly at night." Martin's drawings have also been seen squiggled across screens in NYC's Times Square — as well as on dancers in the New York City Ballet. In her TED Talk, she shares how she developed her unique freestyle process and — in the process of doing so — found her own kind of freedom. "Drawing has taught me how to create my own rules," she says. "It has taught me to open my eyes to see not only what is, but what can be."
