Described by singer Antony Hegarty as “one of the 20th century’s greatest, if unsung photographers”, Peter Hujar’s beautiful, and at times brutal, work captures New York between the gay liberation movement of the 60s and the Aids epidemic of the 80s. In these years, Hujar’s arresting practice ranged from tender studio-shot images of his community of revolutionary figures – including Susan Sontag, David Wojnarowicz and Fran Lebowitz – to raw street-shot portraits of those living on the fringes amid downtown New York’s crumbling piers.
