His humor, his passion, his tough love, the way he valued education above all else during a time when college basketball was basically turning into professional basketball, it was never about wins and losses, although he had more of those wins than anyone else ever, it was always about the journey. The best player’s futures. Their education as students, players, young men. I got to be a ball boy for a couple years as a youngster while he was coaching. Got to see him on the court, in the locker room, at the press conferences, in practice, in his office. My favorite story comes a good 5 years after I was a little ball boy running around McGonigle Hall on Broad Street. It was the night I was to be inducted into the national Junior Honor Society, a reward I was getting for my good grades/community service etc that year. (My mom ran that program!) At dinner at my house, before heading back to the school to receive my certificate and pin, the phone rang. Mom answered, handed it to me! ME?! A phone call at DINNER?! That’s not allowed. Who could this be?! “Adam! It’s Coach Chaney!” HOLY SHIT. “hey coach! Oh my god. What’s up?” “ your dad told me that you’re getting inducted into the national Junior honor Society tonight… And I wanted to call and say congratulations to a job well done! Basketball is great, but your education and your attention to it is the most important thing. Keep up the good work!” “Ummmm thank you! This is so cool!” “And Adam...any tips for the Owls next season?” He probably shouldn’t of asked that… I might’ve gone on for too long… But I had a lot to say about the team that year. We weren’t as deep as previous years, so our stars had to stay out of foul trouble…HAD. TO. STAY. OUT. OF. FOUL. TROUBLE. For most teams, staying in a foul trouble, as important as it is, isn’t necessarily a priority. But for a John Chaney coached team, 2 fouls in the first half meant 100% benching for the rest of the half. Did it lose us a couple games? Yup. But it wasn’t about the wins in the losses, it was about the lessons, it was about self-control」1月30日 4時51分 - shappyshaps
