Whatever you want to call them they have to be one of the most fascinating animals to be privileged enough to follow in the bush. We met up with this pack one morning on my recent trip to @rockfig_safari_lodge with @camscott_wild and followed them for hours on end as they successfully made 3 kills. The funny part is that every time we managed to catch up with the pack, there was absolutely nothing left of the kill. That’s how quick they kill and eat! So all my pictures are of dogs with red faces. I would rate painted dogs as probably the most effective, efficient and successful hunters of all the African predators. It almost seems as though when they set their minds to it, there’s no getting away. Though their success is a double edged sword and can be their downfall, as they are heavily persecuted, especially in habitats outside of protected areas. They need massive tracts of land to roam in and boundaries such as fences mean nothing to them which often results in them unwittingly finding themselves on game farms or in farmlands, where farmers don’t want them and feel nothing to destroy them. With fewer than 6000 wild specimens remaining they are Africa’s most endangered carnivore and are in desperate need of protection. The more awareness that can be spread and funds that can be raised, the better, which is exactly what my long time friends John & Ange Lemon from @painteddogconservationinc have been doing for decades.
