Light a candle tonight @ 8pm.
In April 1939, 23-year-old youth leader Fredy Hirsch was living with his boyfriend in Czechoslovakia. Less than five years later, he was dead - but not before saving the lives of many of the Jewish children in his care while detained at the Nazis' most infamous concentration camp.
On #HolocaustMemorialDay, we remember the thousands of gay men who were persecuted and lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis, shedding light on the stories of love, loss and survival which continued to be suppressed in homophobic Allied countries even after the Second World War was over.
A reminder: Berlin in the 1920s and early '30s was home to one of the liveliest and most vibrant gay scenes in the world. By 1945, an estimated 100,000 gay men had been arrested and thousands lay dead. Our community can never afford to be complacent when it comes to equality.
