A girls right to feel empowered to make her own decisions, have access to a full education and to be treated equally in society is a fight I feel impassioned by. Since joining the all female team @wearefemlead I have seen first hand how far we still have to go in this fight. At @wearefemlead we work within a Ugandan community to actively challenge cultures and attitudes which prevent girls from receiving a full education. The Busiiro community has been hard-hit by Uganda’s COVID-19. Due to schools in Uganda being closed, girls are being restricted to household chores and traditional gender roles are being reinforced, the chances of girls going back to school after COVID-19 are getting slimmer. The main issues faced during this time, not just by girls in our community but globally across many communities, are: • early/childhood marriage rates increasing • child prostitution, many girls have been forced into prostitution to provide essentials for their families • unwanted early pregnancies have increased due to lockdown • increased cases of domestic violence • period poverty has worsened dramatically (inadequate access to sanitary items and washing facilities) When girls receive a full education it has been proven that child mortality rates, child marriage rates and maternal mortality rates all drop. Countries also experience national growth due to the increased earnings of women. I want to utilise my platform to increase awareness of not just the work we are doing at Femlead but the work thousands of other organisations are also doing and to speak up around these issues that are so common but so rarely spoken about.
