An Eden’s whale trap feeding in the Gulf of Thailand 🐋 While we are awe-struck by the magnitude of this creature and its giant gulp, the story behind the shot is worth a listen!

After capturing this moment @bertiegregory explained that this extraordinary behavior is thought to have developed because pollution in the Gulf of Thailand has reached toxic levels. The whale treads water at the surface while feeding on prey. The prey can only survive at the water’s surface because the sewage outlows from land have caused the oxygen in other areas of the water to be used up. The whales have learned to tread with their wide-open mouths just below the surface to create a flow that pulls the fish into their mouth. In a panic some of the fish even jump out of the water right into the whale’s mouth!
