In 1964, the United States passed the Civil Rights Act. Yet Dr. King continued to press forward, knowing there was more work to be done. Shortly after, in 1965, Dr. King organized a voter registration drive in Selma, Alabama to demand Black voter’s rights. A non-violent march led by civil rights workers followed on March 7, 1965. While this effort led to the hospitalization of 50 marchers who were attacked by State Troopers on the Edmund Pittus bridge, it also led to the passage of The Voting Rights Act of 1965. This piece of legislation abolished literacy tests and poll taxes placed to disenfranchise the Black vote.
