Four days after her husband was assassinated in Memphis, Coretta Scott King came to the city to take his place at a march in support of striking sanitation workers. I was a college student at the time and remember listening in amazement to the news reports of this woman taking up her husband’s struggle on behalf of the dispossessed, three of her children in tow. ⁣

She told 50,000 people gathered in the rain at Memphis City Hall that she was there to continue Rev. King's work to make all people truly free. Not just free from the obvious shackles, the legal segregation, or the oppression that one can see, but truly free inside, knowing that each of us has a personal relationship with God that can take us through any darkness. ⁣

She made clear that day and through the rest of her life that her husband's work would live on in everyone who believes that "this nation can be transformed into a society of love and justice, peace and brotherhood." Their legacy endures. The work continues. #MLKDay
