Looking back now I realize how lucky I was to grow up in Southern California listening to “Ramondo & The Blade” mornings on KROQ. It was the glory days of the new British Invasion and KROQ was at the forefront. Breaking bands before the rest of the country. I remember falling in love with bands like ‘Jimmy & The Mustangs’ or ‘Roman Holiday’ that I thought were HUGE just because Jed The Fish played them. It wasn’t until I was older and met people who grew up in St. Louis and Portland and East Orange that I realized it was only my 106.7 bubble.. I remember sitting on the big bed at my nana and Popops glued to Z Channel and seeing the video for GIRLS ON FILM for the first time. This sounded like something I had never heard before. And all of a sudden it was everywhere. Duran Duran struck my Junior High like a shot of nitro glycerine straight to the jugular. When the RIO album came out it was the Junior High version of the Moon Landing to me. Besides the music (listen to the ridiculously underrated bass playing by John Taylor!) in one single solitary image Duran Duran encapsulated a decade in a single album cover. Just one year later as the hair got bigger, the lyrics stranger but the songs just as memorable SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER appears. So fast forward a few decades and I am on a flight to spend the day with Nick, Simon, Roger and John.
