When we are preoccupied with our own pain, we are unable to see the hardships of others.  Hawaii’s beloved Queen Emma has showcased her ability to see other people’s suffering and has been able to come to terms with her own grievances. Her story begins with the loss of her son Prince Albert who passed away at the age of four. It was only a year later that her husband King Kamehameha IV suddenly passed away. Despite these harrowing deaths of her loved ones, she courageously nominated herself as the successor of her husband. Unfortunately, her deceased husband’s duties were succeeded by King David Kalakaua by the declaration of the Legislative Assembly. From these unfortunate events, the Queen fell into a deep depression.  After the tragic state of affairs, Queen Emma traveled to the East Coast of the US along with various European countries. According to history, Queen Emma had grown close to Queen Victoria of England and had even been known as lifetime friends. Similar to Queen Emma, Queen Victoria had also lost her husband and son. Queen Emma’s tragedies continued, when a devastating hurricane hit the Hawaiian islands.  Queen Emma resided on Kauai, an island Hawaiians know of as the most healing. The Queen left her palace and worked tirelessly to assist in disaster relief for hurricane survivors. She comforted elders, fed orphans, and even changed the bandages of the injured with many sleepless nights. She became a firsthand witness to the pain and suffering of others.  Despite the tragedies experienced by the Queen, she eventually came to terms with her grievances. She practiced sympathy and learned to give compassion to others with her “long spoon”.
