It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you my beloved sister Shelley Kay Fera passed away from Covid yesterday. She was only fifty-four.

Shelley was my hero. I was the baby sister who my mother, out of craving respite and solitude, forced Shelley to look after. Five years older, Shelley took that responsibility seriously. She’d take me along on all of her adventures.

We loved taking long walks together. Our favorite walk was to the Circle K to pick up a candy bar or bottle of Coke. We discussed our hopes and dreams on those walks. And she was the biggest supporter of those dreams - encouraging me to pursue acting and follow my dreams of becoming an actress.

Shelley had a huge heart and a keen sense of humor. She was smart as a whip - a walking encyclopedia. She knew everything about everything, especially when it came to music. She exposed me to so many incredible musicians — The Beatles, Sinatra, Billy Joel, Pavarotti, Sondheim, and more. A talented piano player, ragtime tunes were her forte. I loved to watch her delicate fingers glide along the ivories and to listen. We’d perform songs for my parents - she was the Captain to my Tennille, the Marvin Gaye to my Tammi Terrell.

At 16, she had a complete mental breakdown and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. While she functioned for many years — Shelley received her B.A. in Communications from California State University, Fullerton and held down some successful jobs - the disease increasingly took hold of her. By 42, she was gravely disabled. I had the privilege of being her conservator for the past twelve years.

Covid has stolen her away from me. For all of you who refuse to wear masks and have embraced the lie that Covid is no worse than the flu - please think again. I beg you to wear a mask, be safe. Not just for yourself but, more importantly, for others. This is an insidious virus and it is very real.

Shelley had a steadfast faith in God. I am comforted to know that she is now free from all limitation and reunited with our mother and father, whom she adored. I know she’s all around me, hearing my constant refrain — “I love you, Shelley.”
