Remember when this was just abandoned wasteland?! The original coal fired power station was closed in the ‘70’s and completely decommissioned in the ‘80’s. Energy supply had shifted away from coal. The government then made it Grade II listed (protected landmark or building) and the land would then be bought and sold multiple times. 🤦🏻‍♂️ There were rumours of it becoming a theme park. A football ground for Chelsea FC. Even a church. 😳 It was then acquired by a developer to build a whole new neighbourhood but that developer went bankrupt. 🤦🏻‍♂️😆 So decades went by. But eventually the British government brokered some (A LOT - £9BN) Malaysian investment and a whole new quarter for London was imagined! 🎉 The original power station was retained, each chimney taken down brick by brick, and restored and rebuilt to its former glory, and it is now set to become the new Apple 🍏 headquarters! 😱 The largest brick building in Europe is the centre piece to a completely new neighbourhood and will be with us for decades to come, but now, surrounded by culture and people.
