I’m so thankful and proud to be Korean American. Growing up in the states I always felt alienated and lost. I know I look Korean but I’m not considered “Korean” in Korea and although I was born and raised in Texas, I never felt accepted as an “American” in America. I’ve experienced constant discrimination but as I get older, I’ve learned that many immigrants feel this way. So I’m thankful to continue learning about the Korean culture and discovering my Korean American identity. I love our food, language, and culture. The last couple years I got to spend extended periods of time in Korea for the first time ever and it’s been amazing.⁣

I always wondered what life would have been like if I would have been born in Korea. Would I have been happier if I grew up there? More confident? I wouldn’t have experienced as much racism or been bullied for looking different. But then maybe I wouldn’t be who I am today. Maybe I wouldn’t have felt the need for more representation and pursued this crazy job in the arts. Who knows. Either way, I’m still learning what it means to be Korean American but I’m grateful for those who paved the way. ⁣

Today, Korean American Day, commemorates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States in 1903 and honors the contributions Korean Americans have made to every aspect of society. My parents immigrated to America to give us a better life, leaving behind the comfort and familiarity of their home in Korea. Despite all our hardships and struggles, I’m thankful to my parents for teaching me to be resilient and proud. Thank you 엄마 아빠. #KoreanAmericanDay #hwaiting
