She also continually reiterates that where we spend our money is a political act… and I can’t imagine you’d be surprised but we AGREE! (Spoiler for those who don’t read my whole posts—go buy her cookbook, link in bio). So, here’s a post about Erin’s bakery, #Ovenly. Not only does it make the best cookies I’ve ever had, it’s also one of those companies that puts their staff first. She educated me about their “open hiring practices,” which means that they employ people with no resumes and no experience for entry-level positions and provide their staff with benefits like generous parental leave (primary and secondary!), health insurance, paid vacation (even for part-time folks), paid sick days, living wages, and more. Open hiring and the great benefits are part of what she says is their “good jobs strategy.” She also told me her partner @Agathakulaga and she, with backgrounds in social justice work, decided on this strategy because they wanted to include people from marginalized communities into their business and because they believe it promotes a diverse, healthy economy, which is better for everyone. In fact, Ovenly employs formerly incarcerated young people, political refugees, and the majority of their staff live in underserved zip codes. That makes me want to eat all the baked goods! Support Erin and Agatha and Ovenly by buying the newly re-released #OvenlyCookbook or by going online and ordering yourself a Brooklyn Blackout Cake at www.oven.ly. cause they are amazing AF.
