The song was first developed while Jimi was part of the New York R&B scene while performing with his group Jimmy James and the Blue Flames at the Cafe Wha?. However, once he moved to London the song took a life of it’s own due to the Science Fiction influence of then-manager Chas Chandler. ⁣ ⁣ Musically, the song is identified as "a structured group performance”, which comprises of several passages that are further subdivided. The opening section is introduced with a chord progression that’s defined as a "sliding major ninth ... arpeggiated chords and Coltranoid mock-orientalisms” and Mitch Mitchell’s drumming patterns during this entire passage has a strong Elvin Jones influence.
